Cameras... What do you guys (&gals) suggest?

I will be getting a camera soon. I will be using it for Video production, as well as live output events...

At the moment, I have access to a Sony DSR300P, but this is not mine.


I want a shoulder mounted camera, something sturdy yet professional.
I may have a budget of about 1500 UK Pounds...

I quite like the look of the Canon XL-1, as well as the Canon GL-1 and especially the JVC GY-DV500U...

Any other suggestions?

I really don't like piddly little camcorders... They are too small and flimsy to really look professional, in my opinion. I am looking for something Sturdy, quite big (and Easier to operate, I think), DV format...

Anyone know of anywhere I can get 2nd hand cameras at good prices?

Rich - I have a Canon XL1 and it is very very good. If you are looking for a DV camera with that budget - you couldn't go far wrong.

P.S. I was browsing Optex's web site last night and I noticed they had a second-user one in stock for about the price you are wanting to spend (and they give a warranty too) {No, I dont work for them!}

I'd second that. Canon XL-1 is the biz. Its big enough to look pro, but small enough to move around quickly and easily. I like the colour viewfinder too. I shot a short on a train with it and what do ya know? No camera shake! I was well pleased.

So what if the camera doesn't look professional. It's the video itself that matters. I recently bought a Sony DCR-TRV30 and I love it.

One more thing to consider with the XL1 is that it doesn't have an LCD display, just the eye piece. With some types of shooting thats annoying but if you're only going to use it in situations where you have total control it shouldn't be an issue.
